Moving is a big step, whether you're moving across town or across the country. Whether you have moved once or a dozen times, Amber Homes is here to make your transition easier. Print out and use our moving checklist to simplify your moving process.
Moving Checklist
Start planning early.
Once you are confident that you will be proceeding with the sale, start going through your current possessions. Donate the things that you no longer need before you move.
Decide on how you will be moving.
Will you be using a moving company, renting a truck, or using your using own means? If you are using a moving company, reserve them at least a month ahead of time. If you are going to need help with your move, let all of your friends and family know as soon as you know your moving date. Make them write it on their calendar to minimize any last minute cancellations.
List any items you will need to purchase for your new home.
If you are purchasing furniture or appliances, arrange for them to be delivered to your new home when you move in. Most of the time, the delivery includes installation and assembly of your purchase. This will ease your moving process by saving you valuable time and effort.
Start packing early.
Pack anything and everything you will not be using prior to your moving day. This will help to eliminate packing late into the night.
Clearly mark every box.
Mark boxes according to what room you want it located in your new home. This way you know where the most necessary items are located and unpacking will be smoother and faster.
Change your address.
Complete a change of address from your old address to your new one. Change your address for each of the following:
the post office
banks
charge cards
doctors
dentists
friends and relatives
IRS/Social Security Administration
religious organizations
newspaper
magazines
schools
Contact insurance companies.
Contact your auto, home owner's, medical and life insurance agents to arrange for coverage in your new home.
Contact your utility providers.
Let all of your utility providers know of your move. If you are staying within the state, many times you can transfer your current service to your new address. If you are moving a longer distance, you will have to cancel your current service and find a new one to take its place. Be sure to contact your gas, electric, water, telephone, cable TV, trash collection and other service providers. Also make sure to ask for your final billing.
If you currently rent, talk to your landlord.
Let your landlord know in advance of your move out date. Don't forget to ask about your security deposit refund.
